Baby formula containing Melamine

The following article is, in part, based on an article from http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122791874688265673.html?mod=googlenews_wsj The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that it would allow trace amounts of the industrial chemical Melamine to be contained in Baby Formula. The FDA states that trace amounts will not endanger anyone. However, in China, Melamine has caused more than 36 infants deaths. How Can the FDA allow this? The toxic dose is on par with common table salt with an LD50(lethal does for 50% of test subjects)of more than 3 grams per kilogram of bodyweight.FDA scientists explained that when melamine and cyanuric acid are absorbed into the bloodstream, they concentrate and interact in the urine-filled renal microtubules, then crystallize and form large numbers of round, yellow crystals, which in turn block and damage the renal cells that line the tubes, causing the kidneys to malfunction. Although it would take a lot of baby formula to create the lethal does of 3248 mg/kg of Melamine, it has a high likely hood of causing in-numeral health problems in baby's. Plain and simply, the FDA is no doing their job, congress needs to flex it's power and fix this situation.
